Dr. Naresh Devineni
Dr. Naresh Devineni is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at The City College of New York (CUNY). He holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from North Carolina State University and completed his postdoctoral studies at Columbia University. His research spans hydro-climate modeling, extremes analysis, statistical and machine learning methods, water sustainability, and systems analysis—focusing on the intersection of human needs, engineering innovation, and scientific advancement.
Dr. Devineni has authored over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented at more than 90 conferences. He has also published widely-read opinion pieces, book chapters, and open datasets. His work has been supported by major U.S. federal agencies, including the Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, NOAA, and Oak Ridge National Labs.
He has served in several advisory and leadership roles, including as a panelist on the U.S. CLIVAR Predictability, Predictions, and Applications Interface (PPAI) Panel and as a technical committee member for the ASCE Structural Engineering Institute’s special project on climate change impacts on infrastructure. He was also involved with the development of the Freshwater Health Index with Conservation International and chaired the Graduate Research Award Committee for AGU’s Natural Hazards Focus Group.
Dr. Devineni is currently an Associate Editor for Stochastic Environmental Research and Risk Assessment and serves as a reviewer for leading journals such as Water Resources Research, Journal of Hydrology, Journal of Hydrometeorology, Climate Dynamics, and Scientific Reports. He has also reviewed for the National Science Foundation as both a panelist and ad-hoc reviewer.
Among his honors, Dr. Devineni received the DOE Early CAREER Award (2017), the Ralph E. Powe Junior Faculty Award (2016), and the Grove School of Engineering Dean’s Award for Excellence in Research, Teaching, and Service (2019). He was the sole nominee from CCNY for the national Blavatnik Award for Young Scientists and mentored the student team that won first place in the EPA’s Campus RainWorks Challenge (2016).
At CCNY, Dr. Devineni teaches courses in data analysis, decision systems, and water resources systems analysis. He also leads summer boot camps in statistics and water management for high school students through the NOAA-CREST program. He is the creator of dataanalysisclassroom.com, a popular blog that makes statistics and data analysis accessible to a wide audience.
