Education, training, and capacity building are one of the important pillars of this hub. This includes a number of activities related to both formal and informal education and training. Joint Graduate Degree Programs: The Hub will expand and recognize master’s and Ph.D. degree programs in line with the UNU mission and goal. The recognition will be in the form of an additional certificate and/or a joint diploma by CCNY and UNU. Joint programs will involve the UNU staff as co-supervisors or members of thesis/dissertation committees.
The Joint Degree/Diploma for master’s (MS) programs:
- MS in Earth System Sciences and Environmental Engineering (ESEE)
- MS in Sustainability (SUS)
- MA in International Affairs (Colin Powell School)
- MPA in Public Administration and Policy (Colin Powell School)
- MS in Environmental/Water Resources Engineering (CE)
- MS in Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS)

The Joint Degree/Diploma for Doctoral programs:
The PhD program integrates UN-related research and fulfills Civil Engineering Department requirements, with a focus on sustainability, climate resilience, and urban systems.
Program Requirements:
- Research: Focus on UN challenges (e.g., climate adaptation, water resource management, disaster resilience).
- Co-Mentor: UN-affiliated co-mentor required for research guidance.
- Doctoral Committee: Must include a UNU-affiliated faculty member (Or a member of other UNU-Hub Institutes).
- Internship: Complete an internship at a UN agency or related facility.
Courses (9 Extra Credits (waiver option if already taken)):
- Policy-related course from Colin Powell School for Civic and Global Leadership (emphasis)
- Remote Sensing for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Data Science and GIS for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Additional opportunities to be provided to students:
- Collaborate with UNU researchers on interdisciplinary projects.
- Present research at UN-hosted conferences.
- Publish in peer-reviewed journals focusing on UN SDGs.
- Participate in community outreach to promote sustainability solutions.
Micro-credentials and Certificate/Diploma
Micro-credentials and Certificate/Diploma in Geospatial Innovations for Urban Sustainability, aligned with United Nations (UN) priorities. This certificate/diploma will be jointly issued by CCNY and UNU-Hub.
The courses are being designed for undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals, providing practical knowledge and credentials in Remote Sensing, GIS, and Policy for sustainable development.
For Certificate/Diploma Requirements:
Three Courses (9 credits) and Research Project (3 credits) as below:
- Remote Sensing for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Data Science and GIS for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Policy Related Course (Approved by UNU-Hub Faculty)
Research Project (3 credits): A project focusing on issues focused on UN SDGs applying geospatial technologies to develop innovative solutions in areas such as climate resilience, urban sustainability, or disaster management.
