About the Program
The Joint Master’s Program in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering (ESEE) is an interdisciplinary graduate degree offered collaboratively by The City College of New York (CCNY) and the United Nations University-Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH). The program addresses some of today’s most pressing global challenges, including water security, environmental degradation, and sustainable development.
Designed at the intersection of engineering, earth system science, and policy, the program equips students with the skills to integrate environmental engineering solutions with earth system science approaches. Graduates are prepared to become impactful professionals working in global environmental policy, governance, and applied research.

UN-University Collaboration: Earn a Masters degree in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering from a leading U.S. engineering institution (CCNY) and a fellowship diploma in Environmental Modelling and Decision-Making from a United Nations University Institute (UNU-INWEH) dedicated to addressing global water, environmental, and health challenges.
Interdisciplinary Curriculum: The program integrates natural sciences, engineering, and policy to address complex and interconnected environmental systems, empowering students to apply geospatial and analytical methods in areas such as disaster resilience, climate adaptation, and sustainable development.

Program Structure & Curriculum
The program consists of:
- Three core courses (9 credits),
- One non-STEM course (3 credits),
- Two distribution courses (6 credits),
- Three concentration courses (9 credits)
- Final research project (3 credits) co-supervised by UN or UNU-affiliated experts
Degree Awarded
Graduates receive a Master’s Degree in Earth System Science and Environmental Engineering from The City College of New York, along with a Fellowship Diploma in Environmental Modelling and Decision-Making from the United Nations University – Institute for Water, Environment and Health.
Admissions Requirements
- Students need to first be admitted to the ESEE program at CCNY before applying to the joint program
- A minimum GPA of 3.0 or equivalent
Application Timeline
- Open Application: ESEE students may apply throughout the year
- Program Start: August (Fall Semester) or January (Spring Semester)
