Policy, Advocacy, and Outreach

R-SIRUS aims to bridge academic research with real-world impact, working to shape policies that promote sustainability, equity, and global cooperation. Our initiatives empower individuals, organizations, and governments to address urgent global challenges through informed advocacy, strategic partnerships, and outreach activities. Examples include:

#1 Policy Support

The Hub offers policy advice to city authorities, collaborating on sustainable resource management strategies in densely populated areas. CCNY scientists recently received NOAA funding for a project integrating Environmental Justice into NWS services for vulnerable communities against extreme weather. Faculty at CUNY-CREST Institute are also developing equitable flood protection strategies and addressing DEI and environmental impacts due to climate change. Ongoing collaboration with RS-SIRUS-UNU will produce policy briefs, events, and working papers with diplomats. Research at the Colin Powell School will strengthen ties with the United Nations University.

#2 Knowledge Exchange:

Building on over 20 years with NOAA and the CUNY-CREST seminar series, R-SIRUS will launch a D5 (Deliver, Dialogue, Discuss, Discourse, Diplomacy) seminar series to facilitate knowledge exchange among local stakeholders, academia, and international experts. R-SIRUS and UNU will host conferences and seminars, sharing best practices and research on sustainable urban resource management.

#3 Community Engagement:

CUNY-CREST Institute and NOAA Cooperative Science Center have a strong background in community-based research and climate adaptation strategies. Recent involvement in the Caribbean Climate Adaptation Network exemplifies this commitment. RS-SIRUS will continue to engage NYC communities, promoting sustainable management through outreach programs, educational initiatives, and awareness campaigns, empowering citizens to support sustainable lifestyles and the city’s sustainability agenda.
