Dr. Karin Sjöstrand is the Deputy Executive Director of Operations of the UNU Hub R-SIRUS. Dr. Sjöstrand has over 20 years’ experience working with environmental and water related challenges in the public and private sectors. Her background spans topics such as water security, environmental and economic assessments, environmental law, and water policy and governance.

She has a background as environmental consultant working with contaminated soil and groundwater and as a water official in local government working with environmental law and the European Water Framework Directive. Between 2013-2021 she was a project manager and researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden in the Urban Water Management Department.

Before joining City College, she worked at Springer Nature as Senior Editor of Nature Water, covering the social sciences, WASH, agricultural water management, public health and water governance. She received her MS in Environmental Engineering from Lund University and her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.
